Regional Council A letter of recommendation must be obtained by the applicant from a local union affiliated with the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters Apprentice and Training Program. Unions such as the United Brotherhood Carpenters will offer apprentice training programs for aspiring carpenters to start their productive careers. In order to become a carpenter you first need to graduate high school or get your GED. To become an apprentice carpenter you need a high school diploma or equivalent. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires 150 hours each year of related technical instruction which must be mastered by the apprentice in order to successfully complete the program.
